The workshop "Maps and More: Applying Spatial Sciences to Enhance Disaster Resilience for Development in PNG" was designed as an event to bring together a broad range of actual and potential future members in the PNG disaster resilience community to discuss the application of spatial sciences for informing resilience outcomes. Importantly, it included specialists and representatives of agencies who may not have regarded themselves as important contributors of spatial data or information for disaster resilience, and it provided an opportunity to understand the potential to contribute to resilience outcomes. The workshop commenced with a series of presentations on the meaning of spatial sciences, disaster resilience, disaster risk and impact, and how disaster preparedness and mitigation differs from response to a disaster. The role of spatial data and information as a tool for decision making was emphasised, and the variety of contributing spatial data themes was described. The difference between producer and end user of spatial data and associated products was made, and selected organisations were invited to present on how they currently produce and/or use spatial data relevant to understanding of natural hazards and their potential impacts.
