Geoscape Administrative Boundaries is Australia’s most comprehensive national collection of boundaries, including government, statistical and electoral boundaries. It is built and maintained by Geoscape Australia using authoritative government data. Further information about contributors to Administrative Boundaries is available here.
This dataset comprises seven Geoscape products:
- Localities
- Local Government Areas (LGAs)
- Wards
- Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Boundaries
- Electoral Boundaries
- State Boundaries and
- Town Points
Updated versions of Administrative Boundaries are published on a quarterly basis.
Users have the option to download datasets with feature coordinates referencing either GDA94 or GDA2020 datums.
Notable changes in the February 2026 release

The South Australian State Electoral Boundaries have been updated for this release. These changes reflect the most recent redistribution undertaken by the South Australian Electoral Commission. The updated boundaries will come into effect for the 2026 State Election on Saturday 21 March.

Boundary updates within the ‘Maralinga Tjarutja’ LGA in South Australia have removed a previously existing gap, improving spatial completeness.

The ‘Walcha Council’ LGA geometry in New South Wales has been updated. It now encompasses seven localities (previously six).

‘Southwark’ (a new locality) in South Australia has been created and added to the dataset, including a new locality polygon.

‘Asche’ (a new locality) has been introduced in the Northern Territory. This locality was created by splitting Holtze into two parts, resulting in two new locality polygons.

A new LGA-locality link has been added for ‘Bendemeer’ as a result of the updated ‘Walcha Council’ boundary in New South Wales.

There have been spatial changes (area) greater than 1 km2 to the local government areas ‘Maralinga Tjarutja’ in South Australia, ‘Walcha Council’ and ‘Tamworth Regional Council’ in New South Wales, and ‘Burke Shire’, ‘Charters Towers Regional’, ‘Longreach Regional’, ‘Barcoo Shire’, ‘Flinders Shire’, ‘Isaac Regional’ and ‘Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire’ in Queensland.

There have been spatial changes (area) greater than 1 km2 to the localities ‘Neilrex’, ‘Daruka’, ‘Kootingal’ and ‘Merrygoen’ in New South Wales, ‘Yarrabilba’, ‘Petrie’ and ‘Kallangur’ in Queensland, and ‘Flinders Ranges’ and ‘Angorigina’ in South Australia.

‘Kairabah’ locality has been retired in Queensland.

The following wards have been retired in Western Australia: ‘Breaksea Ward’, ‘Central Ward’, ‘Denham Ward’, ‘East Ward’, 'Frederickstown Ward’, ‘Kalgan Ward’, ‘North Ward’, ‘Plympton Ward’, ‘Preston Pt Ward’, ‘Richmond Ward’, ‘Rural Ward’, ‘Scotsdale - Shadforth Ward’, ‘South Ward’, ‘Town Ward’, ‘Useless Loop - Pastoral Ward’, ‘Vancouver Ward’, ‘West Ward’, ‘Woodside Ward’ and ‘Yakamia Ward’.

What to Expect When You Download Administrative Boundaries
Administrative Boundaries is large dataset (around 1.5GB unpacked), made up of seven themes each containing multiple layers.
Users are advised to read the technical documentation including the product change notices and the individual product descriptions before downloading and using the product.

The Australian Government has negotiated the release of Administrative Boundaries to the whole economy under an open CCBY 4.0 license.
