Hunter Groundwater Model extent

Abstract

The dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.

Spatial lateral extent of the Hunter Groundwater model area.

Dataset includes two shapefiles.

1) a polygon layer of the GW model extent and;

2) a point shapefile of the boundary vertices.

There is also a comma delimited text file of the vertices x, y co-ordinates for use in Groundwater modelling software.

Dataset History

Model extent was discussed at the Groundwater team 18 and 19 June workshop in Adelaide from which the following was derived.

1.2.2 LATERAL BOUNDARIES

1) The South Sydney basin will not be included in the Hunter groundwater model although it is the lateral continuation of the Sydney basin. Laterally extending the model is not possible due to data, timing and resources constraints.

2) Eastern boundary: Hunter-Mooki Fault

a) no flow boundary

b) to check if any relevant alluvium / water table aquifer extends beyond Hunter-Mooki fault

3) Northern boundary: Coricudgy anticline separating Sydney basin from Gunnedah basin

a) no flow boundary => to be tested if zone of impact does not reach boundary

4) Southern boundary: \~100 km off-shore

a) no flow boundary

5) Western boundary: arbitrary buffer W of the line Ulan-Gosford

a) general head boundary

The northwestern, northern and eastern boundaries coincide with the Sydney Coal Basin boundary as these sections coincide with the Coricudgy anticline and the Hunter-Mooki Thrust Fault. The northeastern corner of the Groundwater model extent also takes in a small discontiguous section, which is attributed as part of the Gunnedah Basin in the source layer but is actually the Werrie Basin.

The southwestern boundary of the Groundwater model extent runs arbitrarily in a line parallel to and approximately 25km south west of the line between the townships of Ulan and Gosford.
