GGSS(Greenhouse Gas Storage Solutions) Queensland CO2 Storage Geological Atlas 2010

Abstract

This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.

This dataset is the GIS component of a 2010 report and atlas conducted by GGSS (Greenhouse Gas Storage Solutions) for the QLD Government, titled: 'An assessment of Queensland's CO2 geological storage prospectivity - The Queensland CO2 Geological Storage Atlas. The report provided the following abstract:

Thirty six onshore basins in Queensland, Australia, have been assessed for their CO2 geological storage prospectivity through injection into either: regional reservoir-seal intervals ('saline reservoirs' and aquifers); depleted oil and gas fields; or deep unmineable coal seams. This comprehensive state wide regional assessment is based on the technical (geological) suitability for geological storage, and does not consider factors such as potential interference with other resources, distance from emissions nodes or absolute storage volumes. Basins were assessed by evaluating the potential reservoir-seal intervals for their effectiveness for injection, storage and containment of CO2. Methodologies have been developed that allow the estimation of storage capacity volumes within highly prospective reservoir-seal fairways at a regional scale. These estimates reflect conservative values that are more reliable than previous theoretical estimates, which relied upon access to pore space at the physical limit of the pore rock volume to accept fluids. Results show that the greatest potential to store the large quantities of CO2 required to make deep cuts in Queensland's stationary emissions is to use deep, regional reservoir-seal intervals using structural traps or migration assisted storage (MAS) mechanisms. The Bowen, Cooper, Eromanga, Galilee and Surat basins contain Paleozoic-Mesozoic age fluvial reservoirs that have either produced hydrocarbons, and/or are major aquifers, and are evaluated as having the highest prospectivity for CO2 geological storage in Queensland. Other basins have either low prospectivity or are unsuitable for geological storage. Depleted oil and gas fields and deep unmineable coal seams provide only limited opportunities for geological storage of CO2 in Queensland.

Dataset History

This dataset is the GIS accopanyment of the report with the following introduction provided (see startup.pdf):

A GIS is provided as an accompaniment to the 'Queensland Carbon Dioxide Geological Storage Atlas'. This is provided primarily in ArcGIS v9.2 format. However all spatial data are also provided in MapInfo formats. The GIS contains digital copies of all files interpreted and used in the Atlas.

A list of all the shapefiles provided is located in the Metadata folder, giving a description of the files, the source, name of the file, its projection and the location within the GIS data structure. Where external data sources have been used, copyright terms and conditions apply as detailed within text files located in each relevant directory. For data created by GGSS, metadata is captured in the attribute tables. Shapefiles with an asterisk indicate that there is an accompanying text file that explains the field headers within these attribute tables, located in the same folder as the shapefile.

Nine ArcGIS mxd's have been created in ArcGIS Version 9.2. These include an Overview of Queensland CO2 Geological Storage Potential, a mxd for each of the 'High Prospectivity' basins, a single mxd for all 'Low Prospectivity' basins, a single mxd for all 'Unsuitable' basins and a Coal Storage mxd. These mxds' provide the user with spatial datasets and metadata for each of the assessments provided in the Atlas and can be accessed via the links below (links can only be accessed if ArcGIS version 9.2 or later is installed).

Within these mxd's there are hyperlinked cross-sections, basin specific co-ordinate bookmarks, basin specific interpretations and spatial datasets that are relevant to all of Queensland.
