The role of the government geoscientist

The career pathway of a Geoscientist in Government is not well identified and articulated. This has implications for the choice of and mobility into government scientist career path, as well as the diversity and innovation within government science. This talk articulates the ‘who’ and ‘where’ of government geoscientists, why they are needed, and the characteristics of these roles. It then explores how to sustain government geoscientists into the future, noting the current challenges faced by university geoscience departments. The science communication challenges and ‘identity issues’ of geoscience are discussed, including the importance of trust and understanding motivations.
