From time to time, public interest has been generated in the geology of the Great Barrier Reef and the associated regions, particularly in the context of any previous or prospective interest in petroleum exploration. In response to this interest and ongoing public comment, Geoscience Australia has compiled the history of geological investigations by Geoscience Australia, its predecessors and collaborating organisations. A comprehensive bibliography of the results of these investigations is also provided. It is hoped that this record will inform any future public debate on the matter.
