Notes on the surveying of drill holes

Created 17/10/2025

Updated 17/10/2025

In drill hole surveying the azimuth and depression angles of the hole are measured at a series of points. To calculate the course of the hole from these measurements it is often assumed that the measurements are representative of the complete interval separating the half-way points between measurements. This Record describes a method of calculation in which the continuous variation of the course of the hole is taken into account. It gives a practical example of the application of this method, and compares the results with those obtained by the simpler method. Notes are given on the accuracy of surveys.
