The Early Devonian is one of the worst-constrained parts of the Paleozoic Geologic Time Scale 2012 (Gradstein et al. 2012). Biostratigraphically-constrained U Pb zircon dates determined via Chemical Abrasion-Isotope Dilution Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (CA-IDTIMS; e.g. Mattinson 2005) constitute the primary means of dating Stage boundaries, but the only reliable determination between the late Silurian and the base of the Emsian (towards the end of the Early Devonian) is the CA-IDTIMS date of 417.6 +/- 3.0 Ma (2sigma) in the lower Lochkovian of the United States. The Pragian is unrepresented in this dataset, and the numerical dates assigned to the earliest Devonian Stage boundaries remain largely conjectural.
