The Queensland Plateau

Created 20/01/2026

Updated 20/01/2026

The Queensland Plateau, a large fragment of Australian continental crust lying more than 1000m below sea level off northern Queensland, was covered by extensive marine geophysical traversing in 1971 and tested by stratigraphic drilling in the same year. This Bulletin presents the results of stratigraphic mapping of the Plateau using the acoustic stratigraphy available from seismic reflection profiling tied to the drill site. The sedimentary and structural history of the Plateau is deduced and compared with generalised models of rift-margin evolution; considerable departure from the 'norm' is demonstrated.
