The commercial abalone fishery in WA catches three main abalone species the large greenlip and brownlip and the smaller Roe's abalone. Total Allowable Quotas for each species are set and in 2004/2005, fishers can take a total of 336 tonnes whole weight combined species from the fishery. Four main zones (SA border to Pt Culver, Pt Culver to Shoal Cape, Shoal Cape to Busselton Jetty, and Busselton Jetty to the NT border) are further divided into eight areas and these may be managed separately. The fishery probably involves 30 boats, of which 14 fish greenlip/brownlip and employ about 35 divers and deckhands. Project and activity description The project maintains catch and effort database monitoring, policy advice and liaison, annual status reports and stock assessment, assists other state fishery bodies with population model development and publishes manuscripts in reputable international journals on issues relevant to the fishery. The project provides: * an overview annual report on the status of the fishery; * management advice as to the long-term sustainability of the Greenlip and Brownlip Abalone Managed Fishery; and * assistance to industry and management decision makers by investigating and reporting on the biology of the species.
