Derwent Hunter Voyage DH 4/56 Hydrology and Biological Data

Created 25/06/2025

Updated 25/06/2025

This dataset comprises hydrological, biological and plankton data collected on Derwent Hunter Voyage DH 4/56. The voyage took place in the Bass Strait in October-November 1956. Samples of barracouta were taken for analysis of gut contents, and supplemented by data from fish caught by commercial fishermen over the same period. These were then compared with distribution data on krill (Nyctyphanes australis) and other zooplankton, principaly the copepod Calanus helgolandicus. Water masses were identified by associated hydrological sampling, comprising depth profiles of temperature, chlorinity, salinity, dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus. The hydrology data are published in CSIRO's "Oceanographical Station List" series, and the cruise track and the biological data are given in Division of Fisheries & Oceanography Report no. 5.
