Data of Oceanographic and Marine Meteorological Observation: Japan Meteorological Agency

Created 23/06/2025

Updated 23/06/2025

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) carries out oceanographic and marine meteorological observations through research vessels and ocean data buoys in the western North Pacific and the seas adjacent to Japan. Oceanographic and marine meteorological observations are conducted in the western North Pacific and in the seas adjacent to Japan by five JMA research vessels named the Ryofu Maru, the Keifu Maru, the Kofu Maru, the Chofu Maru and the Seifu Maru. Background marine pollution and greenhouse gases are also observed. JMA operates drifting ocean data buoys. The buoys are equipped with sensors near the sea surface level to measure positioning, air pressure, sea surface temperature and wave height/period.
