Argo is a global partnership that gathers high-quality measurements of temperature and salinity from the upper 2000 meters of the ice-free oceans, along with data on mid-depth currents. This information is collected by more than 3,000 battery-powered autonomous floats that drift at depth across most of the world’s oceans. Approximately every 10 days, each float ascends to the surface over a period of about six hours, recording temperature and salinity as it rises. Upon reaching the surface, satellites determine the float’s position and receive the transmitted data. The float then adjusts its buoyancy to return to its original depth and continues drifting until the next cycle. Each float is designed to complete around 150 such cycles.

Argo Australia contributes to this effort by maintaining an array of profiling floats that provide real-time observations of the oceans surrounding Australia. Information and data from both Argo Australia and the International Argo program are available on the Argo Australia website (see data link below). CMAR maintains an internally accessible mirror of the US Argo server data, which is updated regularly (see data link below).
