Certain species of Striatopodocarpites Sedova 1956 and Protohaploxypinus Samoilovich emend. Morbey 1975, from Late Permian assemblages from the Russian Platform, have a ring tenuitas which surrounds and outlines the striate cappa of the proximal face. For many grains, occurring as sporae dispersae, the cappa is often detached and can be identified as a separate striate entity resembling, superficially, members of other genera such as, Vittatina Samoilovich 1953, Fusacolpites Bose and Kar 1966, and Weylandites Bharadwaj and Srivastava 1969. As the types for both Striatopodocarpites and Protohaploxypinus are lost, and it is not possible to determine if they also have a proximal tenuitas, the taxonomic consequences of the present study are currently uncertain. Both generic names have been applied to specimens from the Gondwanan Permian, but the apparent incidence of grains with this feature is rarer than in the Russian assemblages. Further work may show this to be a useful criterion to distinguish otherwise similar pollen from the Angaran/ Euramerian Floral Province and the Gondwanan Floral Province. We suggest that this proximal construction may have been part of the germinal mechanism of these grains. lllinites Kosanke 1950, a characteristic element of Late Carboniferous- Early Permian Euramerian palynofloras, also possesses a proximal ring tenuitas, which suggests a possible phylogenetic link between these genera .
