Updated 17/10/2025

The Houtman Sub-basin is the largest depocentre in the offshore Perth Basin and is almost 700 km long and up to 150 km wide. The Houtman Sub-basin and the adjacent part of the Abrolhos Sub-basin have been explored for hydrocarbons since the 1970's. Discovery of oil at Cliff Head in 2001 sparked exploration activity in the early 2000's. This article was originally published in PESA News.
