Reminder: Data.gov.au is a beta product

Please be mindful that Data.gov.au is a beta product. Whilst every effort is made to maintain appropriate levels of security and maintain confidentiality, data custodians should consider their risk profile before loading data. As a beta product Data.gov.au aims to meet the minimum needs of users, our focus has been on ensuring a secure environment for data to be loaded.

Custodians are also reminded that they have responsibility for the confidentiality of the data they load to Data.gov.au. Once loaded, there are no checks undertaken by the platform on datasets to ensure there is no personal information or confidentiality rules are maintained.

At this time there are no plans to uplift Data.gov.au out of the beta product. If this changes in the future, a Discovery project was undertaken in 2022 that can provide the basis for improvements. If you would like a copy, please contact support@data.gov.au.

About

Data.gov.au is the central source of Australian open government data. Anyone can access the anonymised public data published by federal, state and local government agencies.

This data is a national resource that holds considerable value for growing the economy, improving service delivery and transforming policy outcomes. In addition to government data, you can also find publicly-funded research data and datasets from private institutions that are in the public interest.

The federal government’s public data policy statement requires all government agencies to make non-sensitive data open by default. In addition to free, open datasets, Data.gov.au now includes information about unpublished data and data available for purchase.

Visualising data

Many of the data sets can be visualised using the in-built mapping tools. Datasets that contain a geospatial field (such as latitude and longitude) can be mapped and viewed in NationalMap.

How do I register or upload data

Anyone can register an account on Data.gov.au which can be used for commenting or liking datasets.

To publish government data you must have an account with an Australian government email address (ending with “.gov.au”, including state or local government addresses). Before you consider registering an account for a government (federal, state, local) or government-funded research organisation, you should do a quick search of existing organisations to see if your own organisation is already listed.

If your organisation can not be found, you can register it for the first time. How to set up an organisation account.
