                <gco:CharacterString>The noble gas helium is a critical commodity of strategic importance to Australia and is found within the numerous natural gas fields in onshore and offshore basins. Helium’s availability is intimately linked with the liquefied natural gas (LNG) process where it is recovered from the waste “tail gas” stream enriched in nitrogen and helium.
Geoscience Australia has compiled a geochemical inventory of the composition of proven gas fields in response to the predicted global shortage of helium by 2021. By undertaking this molecular and isotopic analysis of natural gases, Geoscience Australia has identified an untapped resource potential of helium in Australia’s gas fields. The United States, Qatar and Algeria have the highest global resource estimates and production of helium.</gco:CharacterString>
