<gco:CharacterString>The ABARE 2016 plantation statistics data was collated by LGA to give total planted area and residue tonnages. The hardwood data includes a range of eucalypt species however the vast majority of the plantation estate (>90%) is E.globulus or bluegums. LGA’s with <100ha of plantation, which were predominantly in the drier wheat belt have been removed from the dataset which were primarily other Eucalypt species.
Some LGA’s will only show plantation area with the key species marked as OTHER. These are plantations of several eucalypt species including E.astringens, E.polybractea, E.loxophleba, E.cladocalyx and S.spicatum. Harvest residue figures are not known for these plantations yet.</gco:CharacterString>

<gco:CharacterString>A total harvestable residue figure of 30-60t/ha over a 10yr harvest rotation was sourced from the literature. This was from papers by M. Ghaffariyan et al (2013) and A. Wright (2010) and was confirmed by industry consultation for bluegum residues. An average figure of 45t/ha/10yrs is used and these figures were then multiplied by the area of plantation to give an indication of average annual harvest residues potentially available for each LGA.

The core 2016 ABARE Australian plantation statistics shows the spatial extent of plantation. This and the related metadata statement can be found at,

http://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/research-topics/forests#australian-plantation--statistics

Limitations

The residue estimates provide a range of possible production volumes. The actual figures will vary in the field and will ultimately require more in depth investigation for any possible project application. In addition, the plantation statistics are based on 2016 data and the bluegum industry has seen a significant contraction in recent years (2016-2018), especially in the eastern and inland LGAs which is likely to continue. This needs to be taken into account when viewing the data.

It is also important to note that the calculations show total plantation area and the possible residues present. A harvest interval of 10yrs was assumed and total residues over a 10yr period were divided by 10 to give an estimate of residues that may be available on yearly basis. How much of that estate is harvested in a given year and therefor what proportion of these residues is practically available will depend on block age, growth rate and harvest schedules.

Dry weight tonnes per year has been calculated using a moisture content of 11.7% and assumes that 10% of the total area will be harvested every year. In reality this will vary between harvest zones and is intended to give an indication of yearly dry tonnes available
