<gco:CharacterString>The construction and demolition waste (C&D) data represents total waste produced per year by ABS statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries. The figures represent the total C&D waste produced by demolition and building activities, including road and rail construction and maintenance and excavation of land associated with construction activities for the 2014-15 period.
The SA2 population data was obtained from the 2016 ABS census. Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2) are medium-sized general purpose areas built up from whole Statistical Areas Level 1. Their purpose is to represent a community that interacts together socially and economically and generally represent populations of >25000 and where possible will mirror suburb and LGA boundaries though this will not always be the case. </gco:CharacterString>

                <gco:CharacterString>C&D production figures were obtained from the ‘Australian National Waste Report 2016’ commissioned by the Australian Department of Environment and Energy using data obtained from the relevant state government institutions. From this report a figure of 1197kg/capita was used. This includes materials like, masonry, metals, garden organics, timber, paper and cardboard, plastics and glass. This figure was then used in combination with the population data to calculate total annual C&D production for each SA2 region.

The Australian National Waste Report 2016 commissioned by the Australian Department of Environment and Energy can be found at;

Limitations

This data is an average across all SA2 areas. There would most likely be considerable variability between metropolitan and regional areas for total C&I production. This is likely to extend to larger regional centres like Albany or Bunbury and smaller more remote centres as well as within the SA2 boundaries. This should be taken into account when viewing or using the data.
