The rocks and minerals influence the landforms; the mountains, valleys and plains; and the soil on which our unique flora and fauna depend. Having an understanding of the geology of our continent will lead to a greater appreciation of the mportance of Australia's wonderful environment. Geology is the study of the Earth. It includes the study of the rocks on the Earth including the minerals and fossils they contain, the way the rocks are positioned, the processes which formed them and the age of the different layers. Geology also includes the study of the weathering (breakdown) of those rocks and the soils they form. A geological map shows many of these features, especially the types of rocks and their relationship to each other, both in age and location.
