                <gco:CharacterString>## **Abstract** 

This dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme. The parent datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. This processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.


This dataset shows river reaches where riparian vegetation potentially intersects shallow groundwater in the Great Artesian Basin (excluding the coastal areas and Cape York Peninsula).


No effort has been made to distinguish regulated (streams fed from upstream storage) and unregulated rivers and areas of irrigation. This dataset should not be considered where the river is a regulated system or used for irrigation.

## **Purpose** 

Identify possible locations of upward groundwater leakage from the Great Artesian Basin into the shallow watertable. This dataset and its derivititves should not be considered where the river is a regulated system or used for irrigation.

## **Dataset History** 

Selected streams were extracted from the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 3 (GUID: a0650f18-518a-4b99-a553-44f82f28bb5f) watercourse lines (\Disk 1\Vector_data\Hydrography.mdb\Hydrography\WatercourseLines) dataset. Those selected: 

- were classified (HIERARCHY) as 'Major' streams 

- are within the Great Artesian Basin (Revised Great Artesian Basin Jurassic-Cretaceous sequence boundary (GABWRA) - GUID: 241d11ac-649d-46a5-8cae-3dddb53a8010) 

- have a high or low EVI applied, derived from the National Dynamic Land Cover: Trend in the annual Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from 2000 to 2008 dataset (GUID: f6951ba7-8968-4f64-9d38-1ed1a25785a0)


Streams in coastal areas were excluded from this dataset.
