They are an integral part of wetland protection areas, which are defined in the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008.HES wetlands within the Great Barrier Reef catchments provides the basis for DERM's concurrence agency role for development involving high impact earthworks within wetland protection areas under the Sustainable Planning Regulation 2009.\n\n## **Purpose** \n\nWetlands of high ecological significance (HES) identify areas where policies apply under the State Planning Policy 4/11: Protecting Wetlands of High Ecological Significance in Great Barrier Reef Catchments.\n\nIdentification of HES wetlands within the Great Barrier Reef catchments has been determined using the Department of Environment and Resource Management's (DERM) rigorous Aquatic Biodiversity Assessment and Mapping Methodology (AquaBAMM).Wetland protection areas, which are defined under the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008, include HES wetlands and a surrounding policy trigger area of up to 100 metres in urban areas and up to 500 metres outside of urban areas. HES wetlands within the Great Barrier Reef catchments provides the basis for DERM's concurrence agency role for development involving high impact earthworks within wetland protection areas under the Sustainable Planning Regulation 2009.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nLineage statement:\n\nThe wetlands were selected from the Aquabamm GBR non-riverine Version 1.3 data and Wide Bay Burnett non-riverine Version 1.1 data on the basis of the Aqua score (item: AS_SCORE) of \"high\" or \"Very high\" (hence HVH). This dataset was then refined by a set of decision rules, which removed those wetlands with a Hydromod (item:FIRST_HYDR) classification of H2M1, H2M3 & H2M5. Wetlands with a Hydromod of H2M8 were selected from the Queensland Wetlands dataset 2001 version 1 and added to the data as these were not covered by the Aquabamm process in the GBR region. Also Qld Springs data, springs selected as HES under the AES methodology, with a 200m buffer around them have been included.\n\n\n\nSee metadata file included as part of this dataset: Metadata_IQ_QLD_WPAWETLANDS_100K_A.htm\n\n## **Dataset Citation** \n\nQueensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (2014) Wetland protection area - high ecological significance wetland. There are two separate programs of bioregional assessments.\r\n\r\nThe Bioregional Assessment Program (2012 - 2017) seeks to better understand the potential impacts of coal seam gas and large coal mining developments on water resources and water-related assets. It is one of a number of actions undertaken by the Australian Government to strengthen the science underpinning decision making on coal seam gas and large coal mining developments.\r\n\r\nThe Geological and Bioregional Assessment Program (2017 - 2021) assessed the potential impacts of shale and tight gas development on water and the environment.
