This paper provides an overview of the provisional peak ground acceleration (PGA) hazard values and discusses rationale for changes in the proposed design values at the 1/500-year annual exceedance probability (AEP) level relative to Standards Australia\u2019s AS1170.4\u20132007 design maps. The NSHA18 update yields many important advances on its predecessors, including: consistent expression of earthquake magnitudes in moment magnitude; inclusion of epistemic uncertainty through the use of third-party\nsource models; inclusion of a national fault-source model; inclusion of epistemic uncertainty on fault-slip-model magnitude-frequency distributions and earthquake clustering; and the use of modern ground-motion models through a weighted logic tree framework.\nIn general, the 1/500-year AEP seismic hazard values across Australia have decreased relative to the earthquake hazard factors the AS1170.4\u20132007, in most localities significantly. The key reasons for the decrease in seismic hazard factors are due to: the reduction in the rates of moderate-to-large earthquakes through revision of earthquake magnitudes; the increase in b-values through the conversion of local magnitudes to moment magnitudes, particularly in eastern Australia, and; the use of modern ground-motion attenuation models.\nWhilst the seismic hazard is generally lower than in the present standard, we observe that the relative proportion of the Australian landmass exceeding given PGA thresholds is consistent with other national hazard models for stable continental regions.\nAbstract presented at the 2017 Australian Earthquake Engineering Society (AEES) Conference", "num_resources": 2, "num_tags": 7, "organization": {"id": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "name": "geoscience-australia-data", "title": "Geoscience Australia Data", "type": "organization", "description": "Harvester for Geoscience Australia Data", "image_url": "", "created": "2025-06-23T12:29:08.024111", "is_organization": true, "approval_status": "approved", "state": "active"}, "original_harvest_source": {"site_url": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au", "href": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au/geonetwork/srv/eng/csw/dataset/towards-an-updated-national-seismic-assessment-for-australia", "title": "Geoscience Australia"}, "owner_org": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "private": false, "promotion_level": "0", "spatial": "{\"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [[[112.0, -44.0], [154.0, -44.0], [154.0, -9.0], [112.0, -9.0], [112.0, -44.0]]]}", "spatial_coverage": "{\"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [[[112.0, -44.0], [154.0, -44.0], [154.0, -9.0], [112.0, -9.0], [112.0, -44.0]]]}", "state": "active", "temporal_coverage_from": "2018-03-01 04:10:54", "title": "Towards an updated national seismic assessment for Australia", "type": "dataset", "unpublished": false, "url": null, "version": null, "extras": [{"key": "harvest_object_id", "value": "a0024380-0a3d-46b5-b3a6-4e1ecf2b877c"}, {"key": "harvest_source_id", "value": "00080910-39e7-408f-882c-e6e1eb6baadb"}, {"key": "harvest_source_title", "value": "Geoscience Australia"}], "resources": [{"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T05:25:28.831038", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "Link to Conference Page", "format": "HTML", "hash": "", "id": "e830f7ab-3402-4163-8a2e-9a21c28d701d", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T05:25:28.815672", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "Link to Conference Page", "package_id": "635c42dc-54ab-4dd5-a35b-669ebf8bc954", "position": 0, "resource_locator_function": "", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "https://aees.org.au/2017-aees-conference/", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}, {"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T05:25:28.831044", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "Link to Abstract", "format": "PDF", "hash": "", "id": "e798535f-b896-458f-a95c-2773c9b508d8", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T05:25:28.815820", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "Link to Abstract", "package_id": "635c42dc-54ab-4dd5-a35b-669ebf8bc954", "position": 1, "resource_locator_function": "", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "https://aees.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/433-Trevor-Allen.pdf", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}], "tags": [{"display_name": "AS1170.4", "id": "de38826d-2d00-4ab1-b5c8-529727ace815", "name": "AS1170.4", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "EARTH SCIENCES", "id": "927af2a7-7457-45c2-bd55-10000fd09c14", "name": "EARTH SCIENCES", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Published_External", "id": "5178775c-8044-4b7f-881f-5428a4e2d925", "name": "Published_External", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "earthquake magnitude", "id": "cd5fb43f-db90-4c0f-8df3-e7a67870695e", "name": "earthquake magnitude", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "ground-motion models", "id": "8465a617-841b-4a2f-9d29-c21183282401", "name": "ground-motion models", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "probabilistic seismic hazard analysis - PSHA", "id": "c77814aa-4a60-4a81-9dda-c63b4857514c", "name": "probabilistic seismic hazard analysis - PSHA", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "seismic hazard", "id": "a0887df0-929c-4637-8951-02bb35c9d385", "name": "seismic hazard", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}], "groups": [], "relationships_as_subject": [], "relationships_as_object": []}}
