This Geoscience Australia Record provides an overview of the development of the NSHA18.  Time-independent, mean seismic design values are calculated on Standards Australia\u2019s AS1170.4 Soil Class Be (at VS30=760 m/s) for the horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGA) and for the geometric mean of the spectral accelerations, Sa(T), for T = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 s over a 15-km national grid spacing.  Hazard curves and uniform hazard spectra are also calculated for key localities.  Maps of PGA, in addition to Sa(0.2 s) and Sa(1.0 s) and for a 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years (Figure A).  Additional maps and seismic hazard products are provided in a separate Geoscience Australia Record (Allen, 2018).\nThe NSHA18 update yields many important advances over its predecessors, including:\n-   the calculation in a full probabilistic framework (Cornell, 1968) using the Global Earthquake Model Foundation\u2019s OpenQuake-engine (Pagani et al., 2014);\n-   the consistent expression of earthquake magnitudes in terms of moment magnitude, MW;\n-   inclusion of a national fault-source model based on the Australian Neotectonic Features database (Clark et al., 2016);\n-   the inclusion of epistemic (i.e. modelling) uncertainty:\n-   through the use of multiple alternative source models;\n-   on magnitude-recurrence distributions;\n-   fault recurrence and clustering models;\n-   on maximum earthquake magnitudes for both fault and area sources through an expert elicitation workshop; and\n-   the use of modern ground-motion models, capturing the epistemic uncertainty on ground motion through an expert elicitation workshop.", "num_resources": 2, "num_tags": 3, "organization": {"id": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "name": "geoscience-australia-data", "title": "Geoscience Australia Data", "type": "organization", "description": "Harvester for Geoscience Australia Data", "image_url": "", "created": "2025-06-23T12:29:08.024111", "is_organization": true, "approval_status": "approved", "state": "active"}, "original_harvest_source": {"site_url": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au", "href": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au/geonetwork/srv/eng/csw/dataset/the-2018-national-seismic-hazard-assessment-model-overview", "title": "Geoscience Australia"}, "owner_org": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "private": false, "promotion_level": "0", "spatial": "{\"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [[[112.0, -44.0], [154.0, -44.0], [154.0, -9.0], [112.0, -9.0], [112.0, -44.0]]]}", "spatial_coverage": "{\"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [[[112.0, -44.0], [154.0, -44.0], [154.0, -9.0], [112.0, -9.0], [112.0, -44.0]]]}", "state": "active", "temporal_coverage_from": "2025-10-16 04:44:30.547+00", "title": "The 2018 National Seismic Hazard Assessment: Model overview", "type": "dataset", "unpublished": false, "url": null, "version": null, "extras": [{"key": "harvest_object_id", "value": "89c16d95-1709-4f54-b199-43042ca28f5a"}, {"key": "harvest_source_id", "value": "00080910-39e7-408f-882c-e6e1eb6baadb"}, {"key": "harvest_source_title", "value": "Geoscience Australia"}], "resources": [{"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T15:02:35.826141", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "Download the Record (pdf)", "format": "PDF", "hash": "", "id": "715ffebe-d54e-40db-b77f-ea572a5b5c4a", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T15:02:35.820140", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "Download the Record (pdf)", "package_id": "616e7b5f-f8f8-4e95-9baf-eb06815e7e5b", "position": 0, "resource_locator_function": "", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "https://d28rz98at9flks.cloudfront.net/123020/Rec2018_027.pdf", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}, {"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T15:02:35.826145", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "The 2018 National Seismic Hazard Assessment for Australia", "format": "HTML", "hash": "", "id": "4560dbab-b6bf-4711-9d27-92f6e9e3edaa", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T15:02:35.820281", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "The 2018 National Seismic Hazard Assessment for Australia", "package_id": "616e7b5f-f8f8-4e95-9baf-eb06815e7e5b", "position": 1, "resource_locator_function": "", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "https://pid.geoscience.gov.au/dataset/ga/123370", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}], "tags": [{"display_name": "HVC_144647", "id": "e1eac751-8fdf-42ef-acbc-8fd6545da0a5", "name": "HVC_144647", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Published_External", "id": "5178775c-8044-4b7f-881f-5428a4e2d925", "name": "Published_External", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "earthquake hazard", "id": "c4d5576c-acc7-488c-9e81-400b7b07861b", "name": "earthquake hazard", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}], "groups": [], "relationships_as_subject": [], "relationships_as_object": []}}
