There are\nover 9 km of Palaeozoic rocks preserved along the southern bounding\nfault of a major graben (the Arafura Graben) located in the\nsouthern part of the basin. In the uplifted centre of the graben,\nthere is less than 3 km of the Palaeozoic section preserved. The\nbasin is underlain by a Middle to Late Proterozoic sequence which\nthickens to the east, and is probably equivalent to the onshore\nMcArthur Basin. Overlying the Arafura Basin is the Mesozoic Money\nShoal Basin, which is approximately 1 km thick over the central\nparts of the graben, thickening rapidly to the west and thinning\nto the east and north.\nThe structural cross-section that has been drawn is\nlocated entirely offshore. It has been compiled using modern\nseismic and well control. It runs from south-east of Tasman 1 in\na general north and north-east direction tying with Torres 1 and\nArafura 1. It passes through the central and north-eastern parts\nof the graben, and the north-eastern part of the basin. Two-way\ntime to depth conversions were based on the velocity surveys from\nthe wells within the graben, but were modified locally outside the\ngraben. The structural analysis presented is largely based on the\nevidence found along the line of the section. A more complete\nstructural analysis would require a regional examination of the\nentire seismic network. Information from the recently published\nPetroleum Basin Study on the Arafura Basin (Northern Territory\nGeological Survey) has been incorporated into this report, although\nthere are major differences between some of their findings and the\ninterpretations presented here.\nTo date the major risk in hydrocarbon exploration has\nbeen finding adequate reservoir conditions and seal. Contradictory\ninterpretations are present between the maturation and structural\nmodelling of the graben. Untested plays include possible Permian\nand Triassic sediments (up to 5 km thick) which exist along the\nflanks of the graben and which will probably contain good source\npotential and improved reservoir conditions. To the north outside\nthe graben, there are poorly explored areas where it is speculated\nthat there are thick Palaeozoic and Proterozoic sequences.", "num_resources": 3, "num_tags": 7, "organization": {"id": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "name": "geoscience-australia-data", "title": "Geoscience Australia Data", "type": "organization", "description": "Harvester for Geoscience Australia Data", "image_url": "", "created": "2025-06-23T12:29:08.024111", "is_organization": true, "approval_status": "approved", "state": "active"}, "original_harvest_source": {"site_url": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au", "href": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au/geonetwork/srv/eng/csw/dataset/geological-cross-section-of-the-arafura-basin", "title": "Geoscience Australia"}, "owner_org": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "private": false, "promotion_level": "0", "spatial": "Australia", "state": "active", "temporal_coverage_from": "2018-04-20 06:12:17", "title": "Geological Cross-section of the Arafura Basin", "type": "dataset", "unpublished": false, "url": null, "version": null, "extras": [{"key": "harvest_object_id", "value": "1947b3f2-f239-44aa-ba3f-f10f2eb9b970"}, {"key": "harvest_source_id", "value": "00080910-39e7-408f-882c-e6e1eb6baadb"}, {"key": "harvest_source_title", "value": "Geoscience Australia"}], "resources": [{"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T14:53:48.373273", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "Plates", "format": "ZIP", "hash": "", "id": "b8116364-6d5f-4493-8072-00379ff385c9", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T14:53:48.363420", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "File download", "package_id": "24107faa-b478-4281-9987-1bc207d569c0", "position": 0, "resource_locator_function": "information", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "https://d28rz98at9flks.cloudfront.net/14306/Plates.zip", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}, {"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T14:53:48.373277", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "Download the Record (pdf)", "format": "PDF", "hash": "", "id": "69c24c1d-e39d-4b6e-9593-d1c1a328487f", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T14:53:48.363559", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "Download the Record (pdf)", "package_id": "24107faa-b478-4281-9987-1bc207d569c0", "position": 1, "resource_locator_function": "information", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "https://d28rz98at9flks.cloudfront.net/14306/Rec1990_014.pdf", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}, {"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T14:53:48.373278", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "", "format": "HTML", "hash": "", "id": "657d6cb8-5239-40cb-bb8a-c3124eae0bad", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T14:53:48.363660", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "Unnamed resource", "package_id": "24107faa-b478-4281-9987-1bc207d569c0", "position": 2, "resource_locator_function": "", "resource_locator_protocol": "", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Latestproducts/1297.0Main%20Features32008?opendocument&tabname=Summary&prodno=1297.0&issue=2008&num=&view=", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}], "tags": [{"display_name": "Earth Sciences", "id": "40d58e59-cdeb-4021-9e5a-aae60edebdf5", "name": "Earth Sciences", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "GA Publication", "id": "e62fc1f2-3d55-4d1e-bd88-116cd26bc3fd", "name": "GA Publication", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Published_External", "id": "5178775c-8044-4b7f-881f-5428a4e2d925", "name": "Published_External", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Record", "id": "c66268f2-6d34-481b-8962-fd48c58ae831", "name": "Record", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "palaeogeography", "id": "86903eea-c445-4296-b0de-25f93ceb8fb6", "name": "palaeogeography", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "stratigraphy", "id": "a90f2372-1347-41f4-8ff0-fbf84f9381a9", "name": "stratigraphy", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "structural geology", "id": "e764d762-ae42-4b21-96eb-0bf3850bb80b", "name": "structural geology", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}], "groups": [], "relationships_as_subject": [], "relationships_as_object": []}}
