Radiometrically determined 14C dates obtained for 4 sediment cores on Wistari Reef

Updated 24/06/2025

Wistari Reef is a lagoonal platform reef, situated on the Tropic of Capricorn, within the Capricorn and Bunker region of the southern Great Barrier Reef. In this dataset seven radiometrically determined 14C dates were obtained for 4 sediment cores on the reef. The effects of bioturbation within the cores was pronounced, and as such ages are likely to be undersestimated for deeper samples, and overestimated for shallower samples. From the results, the oldest age estimate obtained was from the base of core VC-01 and was aged at 2150±70 yr BP. All core tops were estimated to be ~1100±70 yr BP.
