The geographic approach calculates the proportion of protected areas within each IBRA (Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation of Australia v7) region and subregion to assess sufficiency and to set priorities for future protection and conservation. This is the traditional approach used for CARRS assessment in Australia and has been applied at the State scale (and is also applied nationally). The outcome approach considers how irreplaceable each patch of habitat is, based on its contribution to the conservation of species (using vascular plants and vertebrates). All areas critical to the long-term conservation of one or more species of conservation concern are used to assess sufficiency and to set priorities for future protection and conservation. Due to data paucity, the current assessment was only able to encompass the agricultural zone of South Australia. Work has commenced that will enable the Statewide application of this approach, which will be captured in future updates.
