It first defines what a critical element is, and then presents a list of critical minerals with deposit types and examples that host or potentially host the critical minerals. The geological and geochemical controls on the distribution of critical elements are then discussed, with emphasis on rare earth elements, intrusion-related rare metals, critical minerals extracted from sphalerite concentrates, and lateritic nickel, cobalt and scandium. Finally it discusses critical mineral potential in the Tasman Element and describes international, national and state government support for critical mineral exploration and development.
