The information supplied by the fishers includes data on the composition, quantity and location of catches taken during the month and the amount of fishing effort. Project staff check and enter returns and summarise these data to enable reports to be prepared for use by other research groups and for direct input into the Department's Annual Report and State of Fisheries and local, state and federal agencies including Department of Industry and Resources, ABARE. Enquiries from external bodies and individuals, including regional statistics, are handled within the limitations of database capabilities and the need to protect confidentiality of individual fishermen. These staff also manage other data collection systems relating to the commercial fishing industry including annual returns for vessel characteristics, gear and equipment; Processors returns, and GVP information.
