Dataset ANZLIC Identifier: Title: Basin Irrigation and Salinity Mapping (BISM) Electronic Atlas v2.2 (2003) data collection Custodian: Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) Jurisdiction: Australia Description Abstract: The Murray-Darling Basin Commission (MDBC) established the Irrigation Infrastructure GIS (IIGIS) to coordinate and facilitate collection of data for irrigation infrastructure by the State and Commonwealth Governments across the Murray-Darling Basin, for purposes of natural resource management, salinity and drainage planning. Data themes contributed by many organisations and landowners, collated and managed by the State Contributing Agencies, included drain locations and details, drainage catchment boundaries, drainage structures, supply channels, gauging stations and programs, evaporation basins and other related information, e.g. hydrogeology, pumps, caissons, cadastre, etc. Its Terms of Reference were: • To accelerate the collection of basinwide irrigation infrastructure data to a uniform minimum standard on a Geographic Information System (GIS); and • To make this GIS information readily available to interested parties. (Agreed to by the Irrigation Infrastructure Geographic Information System Working Group at its first meeting on 10 November 1994). From 2001 to 2003 the data were circulated more widely through yearly publication of a Basin Salinity and Irrigation Mapping (BISM) Atlas of Data. This archive version includes the Electronic Atlas version 2.2 published on CD in 2003, State deliverable data layers used in the Electronic Atlas version 2.2 in ArcInfo coverage format and additional metadata statements. Data quality Lineage: In 1991 the MDBC's Salinity Working Group decided that collection and storage of drainage information on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) would assist with the implementation of the Salinity & Drainage Strategy. Key information was identified to include drain location and date of construction, with additional information collected if necessary including area drained, depth of drain, and location and type of point source salt loads. After a few years of ad-hoc data collection, an interstate Working Group was proposed to establish common standards for data collection across state borders. State and Commonwealth representatives met with MDBC Office staff, to determine a standard for data being collected. As a result of this process, the Basin Irrigation and Salinity Mapping Working Group (BISM - formerly known as the Irrigation Infrastructure GIS) was established in 1994. Details such as the attributes that are collected for each data set were determined, the item definitions for storage and the coding options. This information has been continually refined and is represented by the BISM standard. The States gained approval from the MDBC to continue collecting information for the rest of the Murray-Darling Basin. The Commonwealth was contracted to develop a database for evaporation basins, which are an integral part of the drainage system for irrigation areas. Over the following years the MDBC continued to fund the collection of irrigation and salinity management information, with the BISM Working Group coordinating activities and refining the standard as required. In recent times the emphasis of irrigation related salinity management has changed, in particular due to the increasing effects of new irrigation development associated with water trade. In January 2001 the Salinity Working Group endorsed a proposal to undertake the following activities, thus confirming the reliability of the data and expanding the scope of the BISM Project to enable better assessment of salinity contributions from irrigated areas: • Assess accuracy of existing BISM data • Compile and develop GIS data for area irrigated • Compile and develop GIS data for water deliveries • Compile and develop GIS data for crop types See the included Data Supply Reports for detailed lineage of individual coverages. The Murray-Darling Basin Authority would like to thank the following organisations and State government agencies for their assistance in compiling data for the Basin Irrigation and Salinity Mapping project: New South Wales Queensland Department of Infrastructure Planning and Natural Resources Department of Natural Resources and Mines NSW Agriculture South Australia Murray Irrigation Ltd Department for Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation Western Murray Irrigation Department for Environment and Heritage Murrumbidgee Irrigation Corporation Glen Lossie Irrigation Board West Corurgan Irrigation Central Irrigation Trust Macquarie 2100 Golden Heights Irrigation Trust Macquarie Cotton Growers Association Greenways Irrigation Trust Border Rivers Food and Fibre Committee Kinhill Victoria Langhorne Creek Water Company Goulburn Murray Water Pyap Irrigation Trust Sunraysia Rural Water Authority Renmark Irrigation Trust Wimmera Mallee Water SA Water First Mildura Irrigation Trust Sunlands Irrigation Trust Commonwealth Woods Pt Irrigation Board Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia Bureau of Rural Sciences The Murray-Darling Basin Authority would also like to thank the many private landholders that have contributed time and effort in permitting government access and providing irrigation information for their properties. Positional accuracy: Stated accuracy varies by data provider and theme. See the included Data Supply Reports for individual coverages. Attribute accuracy: Standard attributes were collected as specified in the BISM (2001-2005) Data Dictionary. See the included Data Supply Reports for attribute accuracy rating of individual coverages. Logical consistency: This is an archive version of data used to publish the Electronic Atlas version 2.2 in March 2003. IIGIS/BISM data supplied after this date have not been included.
