Among other applications, the\nmap is a key component of Australia\u2019s earthquake loading code AS1170.4. In this paper we\nprovide a brief history of national earthquake hazard models in Australia, with a focus on the\nmap used in AS1170.4, and provide an overview of the proposed changes for the new maps. The\nrevision takes advantage of significant improvements in both the data sets and models used for\nearthquake hazard assessment in Australia since the original map was produced. These include:\n\uf0b7 Earthquake observations up to and including 2010\n\uf0b7 Improved methods of declustering earthquake catalogues and calculating earthquake\nrecurrence\n\uf0b7 Ground-motion prediction equations (i.e. attenuation equations) based on response\nspectral acceleration rather than peak ground velocity, peak ground acceleration or\nintensity-based relations.\n\uf0b7 Revised earthquake source zones\n\uf0b7 Improved maximum magnitude earthquake estimates based on palaeoseismology\n\uf0b7 The use of open source software for undertaking probabilistic seismic hazard assessment\nwhich promotes testability and repeatability\nThe following papers in this series will address in more detail the changes to the earthquake\ncatalogue, earthquake recurrence and ground motion prediction equations proposed for use in the\ndraft map. The draft hazard maps themselves are presented in the final paper.", "num_resources": 1, "num_tags": 5, "organization": {"id": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "name": "geoscience-australia-data", "title": "Geoscience Australia Data", "type": "organization", "description": "Harvester for Geoscience Australia Data", "image_url": "", "created": "2025-06-23T12:29:08.024111", "is_organization": true, "approval_status": "approved", "state": "active"}, "original_harvest_source": {"site_url": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au", "href": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au/geonetwork/srv/eng/csw/dataset/the-2012-australian-seismic-hazard-map-introduction-and-approach", "title": "Geoscience Australia"}, "owner_org": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "private": false, "promotion_level": "0", "spatial": "{\"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [[[112.0, -44.0], [154.0, -44.0], [154.0, -9.0], [112.0, -9.0], [112.0, -44.0]]]}", "spatial_coverage": "{\"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [[[112.0, -44.0], [154.0, -44.0], [154.0, -9.0], [112.0, -9.0], [112.0, -44.0]]]}", "state": "active", "temporal_coverage_from": "2019-04-08 01:55:29", "title": "The 2012 Australian Seismic Hazard Map - Introduction and Approach", "type": "dataset", "unpublished": false, "url": null, "version": null, "extras": [{"key": "harvest_object_id", "value": "85aa0379-c31a-4087-b196-fdd7abd1607f"}, {"key": "harvest_source_id", "value": "00080910-39e7-408f-882c-e6e1eb6baadb"}, {"key": "harvest_source_title", "value": "Geoscience Australia"}], "resources": [{"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T16:33:16.984488", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "Link to article (pdf)", "format": "PDF", "hash": "", "id": "37d475d4-f34b-4417-a301-f095ad0f210f", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T16:33:16.976809", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "Link to article (pdf)", "package_id": "a6a97c2d-4858-40db-b756-347d36761184", "position": 0, "resource_locator_function": "", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "https://aees.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/37-MCPHERSON-Andrew.pdf", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}], "tags": [{"display_name": "EARTH SCIENCES", "id": "927af2a7-7457-45c2-bd55-10000fd09c14", "name": "EARTH SCIENCES", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Earthquake Engineering", "id": "2c291903-19dd-4903-add6-54cd41391cec", "name": "Earthquake Engineering", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Natural Hazards", "id": "5a00d6e7-b91b-4c8a-aba2-40aa3f4a606b", "name": "Natural Hazards", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Published_External", "id": "5178775c-8044-4b7f-881f-5428a4e2d925", "name": "Published_External", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Seismology and Seismic Exploration", "id": "25911783-144c-461c-863e-ae591fa7638a", "name": "Seismology and Seismic Exploration", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}], "groups": [], "relationships_as_subject": [], "relationships_as_object": []}}
