Based on these empirical laws, Reasenberg and Jones (1989) proposed a model to estimate the probability of earthquakes during an aftershock sequence as a function of time and magnitude. In this study, the parameters of the Reasenberg and Jones aftershock magnitude-time distribution are derived using the Australian instrumental earthquake catalogue (1900-2010). Two sets of model parameters are determined: sequence-specific parameters determined for well recorded aftershock sequences and generic parameters determined for a stack of events with magnitudes larger than or equal to 5. Both sets are found to be comparable to similar studies in other regions of the world. The spatial variation of model parameters is also studied and it is found that aftershock sequences in Southeastern Australia are less productive than sequences in Western Australia. Applicability of the derived generic parameters to forecast aftershock rates in Australia is verified using recent aftershock sequences that were not included in the earthquake catalogue such as the 2012 Gippsland earthquake.", "num_resources": 2, "num_tags": 3, "organization": {"id": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "name": "geoscience-australia-data", "title": "Geoscience Australia Data", "type": "organization", "description": "Harvester for Geoscience Australia Data", "image_url": "", "created": "2025-06-23T12:29:08.024111", "is_organization": true, "approval_status": "approved", "state": "active"}, "original_harvest_source": {"site_url": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au", "href": "https://ecat.ga.gov.au/geonetwork/srv/eng/csw/dataset/aftershock-probability-model-for-australia", "title": "Geoscience Australia"}, "owner_org": "91f054ec-d0c3-4d42-a89a-5daa2c7a6818", "private": false, "promotion_level": "0", "spatial": "Australia", "state": "active", "temporal_coverage_from": "2018-04-22 08:33:49", "title": "Aftershock probability model for Australia", "type": "dataset", "unpublished": false, "url": null, "version": null, "extras": [{"key": "harvest_object_id", "value": "f05a9dfb-8a1c-49ac-a955-c022f333fe97"}, {"key": "harvest_source_id", "value": "00080910-39e7-408f-882c-e6e1eb6baadb"}, {"key": "harvest_source_title", "value": "Geoscience Australia"}], "resources": [{"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T22:08:12.909493", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "Link to Publication", "format": "PDF", "hash": "", "id": "b73222d4-7687-45a9-a05b-5c934e02f3af", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T22:08:12.903512", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "External Publication", "package_id": "4f390b6d-5d9c-4c31-b738-0ae557399c38", "position": 0, "resource_locator_function": "download", "resource_locator_protocol": "WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "http://www.aees.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/4-Ghasemi-Hadi-Afterschock.pdf", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}, {"cache_last_updated": null, "cache_url": null, "created": "2025-10-16T22:08:12.909497", "datastore_active": false, "datastore_contains_all_records_of_source_file": false, "description": "", "format": "HTML", "hash": "", "id": "32362301-6057-43b9-80b3-a108de7ead0d", "last_modified": null, "metadata_modified": "2025-10-16T22:08:12.903644", "mimetype": null, "mimetype_inner": null, "name": "Unnamed resource", "package_id": "4f390b6d-5d9c-4c31-b738-0ae557399c38", "position": 1, "resource_locator_function": "", "resource_locator_protocol": "", "resource_type": null, "size": null, "state": "active", "url": "http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Latestproducts/1297.0Main%20Features32008?opendocument&tabname=Summary&prodno=1297.0&issue=2008&num=&view=", "url_type": null, "zip_extract": false}], "tags": [{"display_name": "External Publication", "id": "2ef95c3e-4342-4e16-af22-7360303a3b7b", "name": "External Publication", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Published_External", "id": "5178775c-8044-4b7f-881f-5428a4e2d925", "name": "Published_External", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}, {"display_name": "Seismology and Seismic Exploration", "id": "25911783-144c-461c-863e-ae591fa7638a", "name": "Seismology and Seismic Exploration", "state": "active", "vocabulary_id": null}], "groups": [], "relationships_as_subject": [], "relationships_as_object": []}}
